As an understory plant, Calathea will not tolerate bright direct sunlight for very long. However, very low light conditions will slow down the growth of the plant and increases the chance that overwatering will occur since the plant will be using less water. Moderate indirect light is ideal to encourage steady growth.

Calathea like consistently moist soil, however it is important that the soil and pot is well draining and that the roots are not sitting in a pool of water. Leaves will curl and crisp when the plant is not receiving adequate moisture.
