Calathea Zebrina, named for its bold zebra-striped leaves, is one of the larger Calathea varieties, capable of reaching a height of three feet as a houseplant. As the bright green leaves unfurl, Calathea Zebrina begins to resemble a miniature clump of striped banana plants. This plant is a must-have for anyone looking to bring a tropical atmosphere into the home.

Care

When growing Calathea Zebrina, consider their natural habitat. Native to the understory of tropical rainforests in South America, Calathea Zebrina requires high levels of humidity, and they dislike bright direct sunlight. Brown leaf edges are a sign of low humidity or too much light. Fertilizer is important for Calathea Zebrina. We recommend diluting a general houseplant fertilizer by about half and applying monthly throughout the spring and summer.

Light

As an understory plant, Calathea Zebrina will not tolerate bright direct sunlight for very long. However, very low light conditions will slow down the growth of the plant and increases the chance that overwatering will occur since the plant will be using less water. Moderate indirect light is ideal to encourage steady growth.

Water

Calathea Zebrina likes consistently moist soil, however it is important that the soil and pot is well draining and that the roots are not sitting in a pool of water. Leaves will curl and crisp when the plant is not receiving adequate moisture.
