Your New Favorite Houseplant

We're excited to let you know that you can now buy the Dendrobium Orchid at Plant Proper! The Dendrobium Orchid belongs to one of the biggest and most varied groups of orchids. People love it for its eye-catching purple or white flowers that can light up any room. If you're crazy about orchids or just starting out, the Dendrobium Orchid is a great pick to add some class to your home.

A Pop of Color for Any Space

The Dendrobium Orchids we sell have lovely blooms that can be anything from bright purple to pure white. This makes them fit in well with any indoor garden. We can't promise your orchid will show up with buds or flowers, but don't worry. If you take good care of it, you'll see an amazing display of flowers in time.

Light and Watering Needs

Dendrobium Orchids do best in bright light that's not direct. Too much direct sun can harm the leaves, while not enough light might slow down how fast it grows. To get the best results put your orchid somewhere it can get plenty of filtered light.

When it comes to watering, Dendrobiums are quite forgiving. They prefer to be watered when the top inch of soil is dry to the touch. Be mindful of overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. One telltale sign of underwatering is shriveled canes, so keep an eye on the condition of your plant to ensure it's getting the right amount of moisture.

Understanding Epiphytes

Dendrobium Orchids are primarily epiphytes, meaning they naturally grow on other plants without taking nutrients from their host. In their natural habitat, they often grow on tree branches, so they need well-draining soil to thrive. A bark-based orchid potting mix is ideal for Dendrobiums, as it mimics their natural environment and helps prevent root rot.

Humidity and Fertilization

While Dendrobium Orchids can tolerate average household humidity, they do best in higher humidity levels. Consider placing your orchid in a humid spot or using a humidity tray to keep it happy.

Fertilization is key to keeping your Dendrobium Orchid healthy and promoting blooms. We recommend fertilizing monthly during the spring and summer with a diluted general houseplant fertilizer. This will provide the nutrients your orchid needs to grow strong and produce beautiful flowers.

Repotting Your Dendrobium Orchid

Dendrobium Orchids like to grow in tight spaces so you don't need to change their pots often. You should repot them every two to three years, or when the plant gets too big for its pot or breaks down the potting mix.

When you need to repot, pick a pot big enough for four to six new canes. Take the plant out of its old pot, wash the roots, and put it in the new pot with fresh bark-based potting mix. As you fill the pot, spread the roots out so the plant grows.

Blooming Seasons

Dendrobium Orchids bloom in spring and summer. But if you take good care of them and give them the right conditions, some types might bloom more than once a year letting you enjoy their beautiful flowers more often.
