Care

Alocasias grow from an underground stem called a rhizome, which is similar to a bulb. If the plant were to lose its leaves, it can regrow from the rhizome. Alocasia Black Velvet will appreciate higher levels of humidity provided by misting or a humidifier. We recommend fertilizing this plant every month during spring and summer with a diluted general houseplant fertilizer. Propagation is done by separating offsets from the rhizome.

Light

Alocasia prefer moderate to bright indirect light for best color and growth. We recommend keeping Alocasia out of the bright direct sun, which can burn the foliage.

Water

Overwatering is a special danger to Alocasia because if the rhizome rots, the plant may not recover. It is very important to make sure that the top few inches of soil are dry in between waterings to prevent overwatering. Underwatering may result in a slightly wilted appearance, but the plant should recover quickly once watered.
