Care
Light
As an understory plant, Calathea will not tolerate bright direct sunlight for very long. However, very low light conditions will slow down the growth of the plant and increases the chance that overwatering will occur since the plant will be using less water. Moderate indirect light is ideal to encourage steady growth.
Water
Calathea enjoy consistently moist soil, however it is important that the soil and pot is well draining and that the roots are not sitting in a pool of water. Leaves will curl and crisp when the plant is not receiving adequate moisture.
Care
When growing Calathea, consider their natural habitat. Native to the understory of tropical rainforests in South America, Calathea require high levels of humidity, and they dislike bright direct sunlight. Brown leaf edges are a sign of low humidity or too much light. Fertilizer is important for Calathea. We recommend diluting a general houseplant fertilizer by about half and applying monthly throughout the spring and summer.
