Care

Staghorn Fern care is not difficult, but it is different from most houseplant care. Staghorn ferns are usually grown either in a basket or mounted to a piece of wood. They prefer high levels of humidity. Dried shield fronds should not be removed, as they form a protective ball around the roots of the plant. Fertilize your fern with a general houseplant fertilizer in the spring and summer, diluted by about one half of the recommended amount.

Light

Staghorn Ferns grow naturally in the forest understory, so moderate indirect light is best inside the home. Too little light will slow growth and make the plant prone to rot. Too much light will cause it’s fronds to yellow or burn.

Water

Staghorn Ferns should be watered by misting the entire plant every few days, especially in warm or dry conditions. Water the root ball by soaking it in a sink or bathtub every one to two weeks. Be sure to allow the roots to dry in between waterings, as root rot may set in due to overwatering. Dry and crispy antler fronds are a sign of underwatering, but brown and dry shield fronds are normal.
