Q&A with “PVPlantGuy”
Back in 2016, “PVPlantGuy” received an African Milk Tree as a gift, and from that moment, his love affair with plants began. As his passion grew, so did his collection, turning his home into a lush greenhouse. “pvplantguy”’s hobby of capturing his plants on social media quickly blossomed, leading to a thriving online following.
Creating an Oasis
David, affectionately known as “pvplantguy”, resides in Jacksonville, Florida, where he seamlessly merges the boundaries between indoors and outdoors. He is always looking for ways to bring more nature into his space, with his door constantly open to invite the natural world in. He spends countless hours by his pool, surrounded by greenery, while his dogs play nearby. Inside, his home is transformed into a verdant oasis, complete with captivating nature-inspired art, such as his stunning moss wall.
Maintaining his growing collection of plants has become more than just a hobby for David. He shares, “Watering all my plants can take up to two hours a week, and that’s not even counting content creation, plant rehabilitation, and other tasks, which add another two to three hours.” Despite his busy schedule, he still finds time to embark on new projects, such as his recent creation—a terracotta orchid tower.
Lessons Learned in Plant Care
Constantly pushing the boundaries in the realm of plant care, “PVPlantGuy” generously shares the lessons he’s learned along the way. “Not protecting my plants during winter was a big mistake that I learned the hard way,” he reflects. “I’ve come to realize the importance of considering not only a plant’s specific care needs but also the environment in which I intend to place it. Understanding factors like lighting, watering patterns, soil quality, and climate considerations all contribute to meeting a plant’s needs.”
His most valuable lesson? “Think of light for plants as exercise is to humans. Just as we need more water after a tough workout, plants become thirstier with increased sun exposure.” Viewing plants as similar to ourselves can revolutionize our approach to their care, fostering happier and healthier houseplants.
David extends his passion beyond his personal garden, offering assistance to friends in need of plant rehabilitation or joining them on plant-shopping excursions. Whether diagnosing issues by identifying the root cause or simply sharing his expertise, he’s always ready to lend a helping hand. As David’s care for his friends and his plants go hand in hand, gifting plants is another one of his joys. He enjoys choosing plants thoughtfully and admires his favorite plants that were once gifts from friends.
Plant Gift Ideas from “PVPlantGuy”
If you’re unsure how to properly gift a plant, David has some advice: “I like to find plants that my friends don’t already have and that fit their personality. When gifting a plant, I find the simpler the instructions, the better. Reminding them to put it in a place they won’t forget is key.” Stressing the importance of appropriate lighting, he adds, “I usually only gift a plant if I’m sure there’s a spot with suitable lighting.” While taking a page from David’s book, consider grabbing a Plant Proper gift card to help them pick out their favorite plants. Alternatively, here are some plants we think would make great gifts to get you started:
- For the funky friend: Ponytail Palm
- For the spiritual friend: Philodendron Birkin
- For the friend with the big heart: Hoya Kerrii ‘Leaf’
- For the friend who ‘lights up the room’: Dracaena Ray of Sunshine
