Calathea Rufibarba Care

Watering:

Calathea Rufibarba loves their soil to be consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. These beauties are sensitive to the chemicals in tap water, so using distilled or filtered water, or letting tap water sit out overnight, can help prevent brown leaf edges. If they’re too dry, you’ll notice the leaves curling or developing crispy edges.

Light:

Calathea Rufibarba thrives in bright, indirect light but can also tolerate lower light conditions. Direct sunlight can fade their stunning leaf patterns and scorch the leaves, so it's best to keep them away from harsh rays. An east- or west or north-facing window is perfect for these light-sensitive plants. Rotate your plant every few weeks to promote even growth.

General Care:

• Fertilizing: Feed every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a diluted, balanced fertilizer. This helps maintain their vibrant foliage.

• Pest Control: Calatheas can attract spider mites and other pests, especially in dry conditions. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if you notice any pests. Keeping the humidity high can also help keep pests at bay.

• Repotting: Repot every 1-2 years in spring, using a well-draining potting mix. They like to be a little snug in their pots, so don’t rush to repot them.

• Humidity: These plants adore high humidity, around 60% or higher. Mist regularly or place near a humidifier to keep them happy. If the edges of the leaves turn brown, it might be a sign that the air is too dry.

• Pruning & Propagation: Remove any yellow or brown leaves to keep your Calathea looking its best. You can propagate by division when repotting, gently separating the plant into smaller sections.
