Ficus Elastica Ruby Care

Ficus Elastica Ruby Care | Care Guide | Plant Proper

Watering:

Ficus plants like their soil to dry out a bit between waterings. Water when the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry. They can be a bit finicky, so if they're too dry or too wet, they’ll drop leaves to let you know. Keep an eye on the watering schedule—these plants prefer consistency. Be sure to water less in lower light and during the winter months.

Light:

Ficus Elastica Ruby loves bright, indirect light. An south- or west or east-facing window is ideal, where they can soak up plenty of light without direct, harsh rays. If they don't get enough light, they might drop leaves or grow leggy. Remember to rotate your Ficus regularly to encourage even growth and prevent it from leaning towards the light source.

General Care:

  • Fertilizing: Feed your Ficus every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, diluted fertilizer. This will help support their lush growth and keep their foliage vibrant.

  • Pest Control: Ficus can be prone to pests like spider mites and scale, especially in dry conditions. Treat with neem oil or insecticidal soap if you notice any unwanted visitors.

  • Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound. Use a well-draining potting mix and a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogging.

  • Humidity: Ficus enjoys higher humidity levels, but they can adapt to normal household conditions. If the air in your home is dry, misting the leaves or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can help.

  • Pruning & Propagation: Prune to maintain shape and size, cutting back to a node to encourage bushier growth. Propagate by taking stem cuttings and rooting them in water or soil—just be patient, as Ficus cuttings can take some time to root.
